    Description

French Line: Very rare bound issue of the NORMANDIE Souvenir Number from June 1935 of the "The Shipbuilder and Marine Engine-Builder" The Shipbuilder offered a limited number of these special bound liner introduction issues. The cover is embossed with gold lettering. Inside are 154 pages dedicated to the great vessel. Typical for bound copies, neither the magazine cover nor advertisements are included. Seventeen chapters cover everything from design and construction to public rooms and cabins. There are hundreds of photos and several color plates showcasing all aspects of the ship. Of special interest is a plan of the huge galley. It really must have taken an army to prepare the cuisine the ship is famous for. I count seven fold-out pages. There are both outboard and inboard elevations, plans of eleven decks, a sectional view, general arrangements of the main propulsion motor compartment, general arrangements of the boiler room and auxiliaries, plus a host of electrical schematics beyond my pay grade to comprehend. A detailed chapter on the NORMANDIE's fire-safety features is a melancholy read considering what happened in 1942. Very good condition.
