    Description

Exceptionally rare and original, ca1902 W. Duke, Sons & Co. Tobacco Company Point-of-Sale, Chromolithographed Advertising Sign for "Pin Head Cigarettes" featuring a portrait of a beautiful, young woman.
At the time that this Advertising Sign was published, packages of Duke's Cameo Cigarettes contained insert Tobacco cards from many of the most highly sought after series of the 19th century. Although this Sign does not picture or reference said Tobacco Cards, the Sign is an outstanding “go with” display item for even the most advanced, 19th century Tobacco card Collection!!
This very rare Tobacco / Cigarette Card related Advertising Sign measures approx. 17” by 24 1/2” and is framed for display in a 20th century, gold gilt wood frame (overall size of framed display is 18 3/4” by 27”). The Sign features a bust portrait of a beautiful and alluring young woman wearing a very low cut dress. Text at the top of the Sign reads simply “Pin Head Cigarettes”. There is an image of a Pack of Pin Head Cigarettes at the lower left hand corner and further text near the bottom of the sheet that reads “Manufactured By British American Tobacco Co. Ltd.”. The Cigarette pack identifies the manufacturer as W. Duke, Sons & Co. Tobacco Company and apparently this Advertising Sign was published to advertise Pin Head Cigarettes manufactured by Duke & Son for export by their subsidiary.
Pinhead Cigarettes were first introduced by W. Duke & Sons in 1884. After the merger of Duke with the other 'big four' cigarette manufacturers Allen & Ginter, Kinney Bros, Goodwin and Kimball in 1890, the brand became part of of the new American Tobacco (better known as 'The Trust') Company's stable. It was also one of the first cigarettes to be machine made. In fact, many Pin Head packs made in the early 1890's were emblazoned with words: "These cigarettes are made on the Bonsack Cigarette Machine". This Sign was made to advertise Pin Head Cigarettes manufactured by Duke for export by The British-American Tobacco Company which was set up in 1902 as a joint venture of The American Tobacco Company and The Imperial Tobacco Company of Great Britain.
This very rare and original, ca1902 Duke Tobacco Company, Chromolithographed Advertising Sign for Pin Head Cigarettes is in very good condition. The Sign displays nicely - the colors are bright and vibrant, rich and warm. There is no soiling or staining to the sheet. There are a number of creases mostly confined to the edges of the sheet and not affecting the portrait of the woman. Overall this outstanding Chromolithographed Advertising Sign display beautifully and we ask that interested bidders please see the scans below for a good representation of the form and condition of this rare Advertising Sign.
