Very Rare and original, 1901 Chromolithograph Sleepy Eye Flour Printed Textile / Fabric Pillow Top Advertising Premium. This wonderful Old Sleepy Pillow Top measures approx 21 1/2" by 21 1/2" and is printed on a medium weight, cotton muslin material. The stunningly beautiful, chromolithograph image features a bust portrait of “Old Sleepy Eye” at the upper left hand corner and a central tableaux titled “Chief Old Sleepy Eye Meets the Great Father (President Monroe) at Washington, 1824”. The image pictures President James Monroe seated at a desk surrounded by officers in military dress. In the hall before the President stands Old Sleepy Eye his arms raised in salute. Beside him stands a frontiersman and behind the two figures there is a large delegation of Native American Indians in full regalia. Behind the Indians seated on the floor of the hall are a number of “distinguished gentlemen” who appear to be members of Congress.
Surrounding this central image is a border “frame” containing images of Native American arms and accouterments as well as an Indian Camp scene.
Ishtakhaba also known as Chief Sleepy Eye, was a Native American chief of the Sisseton Dakota tribe. He became chief sometime between 1822 and 1825, receiving a commission from the Bureau of Indian Affairs as chief in 1824 and remained chief until his death in 1860. His band, known as the Swan Lake or Little Rock Band, hunted "in southwestern Minnesota and southeastern Dakota ... between Swan Lake and Coteau des Prairies," until forced to move to reservation land near the Minnesota River in the wake of the 1857 Spirit Lake Massacre. Ishtabkhaba tried to promote peace with whites in and around the state of Minnesota. He was a signer of at least four treaties with the United States government, including the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux, and met with President James Monroe in Washington, D.C. in 1824. Chief Sleepy Eyes was known for his friendships with "explorers, traders, missionaries and government officials". However, his nephew, who also bore the name "Sleepy Eye”, was involved in the 1862 Sioux Uprising.
This beautiful fabric Pillowtop was issued as a Premium by the Sleepy Eye Flour Mill of Sleepy Eye, Minnesota in 1901 as documented in the company records. A second Pillow Top was also issued featuring a large, central portrait of Chief Sleepy Eye.
This rare and original, Sleepy Eye Flour Advertising Premium is in excellent condition. The Textile is complete and intact with original margins on all sides. The colors are bright and vibrant and there is no fading or discoloration. There is a single small, light and unobtrusive water stain in the area of Chief Sleepy Eye’s feet but otherwise the fabric is exceptionally clean and bright with no other soiling or staining. The Pillow Top came to us framed and has never been constructed into a pillow (we can remove it from the large, modern frame it came in if the high bidder so wishes – it is mounted with thin staples along the top and bottom edges and it can be removed with damaging the fabric). Please see the scans for a good indication of the content and outstanding condition of this rare and very beautiful Sleepy Eye Flour Mill Pillow Top Premium.

Important Notes about Shipping Charges:
The amount quoted for Shipping & Handling is calculated by eBay and is equal to the EXACT amount charged by the Post Office plus a .00 "packing fee" - the .00 fee is our only compensation for the virgin packing materials we use on all of our professionally packaged boxes as well as our cost for the salaried help that does most of our packing - as I am sure you can see, we make NO profit on the Shipping charges and, in fact, our costs are usually greater than the .00 fee.
